Alzheimer’s
Dementia is one of the most common disabilities within the elderly population. This condition defines a group of symptoms which affect thinking processes, memory, as well as social abilities. Alzheimer’s, a subtype of dementia, is marked by a decrease in reasoning abilities, memory recall, and impaired communication skills. Other behavioral manifestations associated with Alzheimer’s disease are depression and aggressive behavior. Due to declining motor and cognitive abilities associated with the elderly population, maintaining proper oral health in those affected with Alzheimer’s disease can be significantly more challenging. Establishing proper dental care habits during earlier stages of the disease can increase the probability of keeping proper oral care throughout the disease progression. As the condition progresses to later stages, it can take a significant toll on a patient’s oral health.
