Course Description
The Covid 19 pandemic has changed our lives and impacted dental practices. Every dental office needs to be familiar with current guidance to provide a safe environment for care. There are updated recommendations from OSHA, NIOSH, CDC and ADA that should be incorporated into everyday practice. This guidance supplements existing requirements from the NYS DOH and SED.
This course will examine aspects of infection control including how to handle the most recent pathogens that are creating health challenges world-wide.
This course fulfills the specific infection control course requirements for the mandated NYS Infection Control as well as OSHA training.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of this course participants will:
- Understand the professional responsibility to monitor office infection control practices.
- Understand how pathogens may be transmitted in the work environment: patient to healthcare worker, healthcare worker to patient, and patient to patient.
- Apply current scientifically accepted infection prevention and control principles as appropriate for the specific work environment.
- Minimize the opportunity for transmission of pathogens to patients and healthcare workers.
- Familiarize professionals with the law requiring this training and the professional misconduct charges that may be applicable for not complying with the law.
- Comply with New York State and OSHA training requirements

About the Speaker:
Terrence J. Thines, DDS, MS
Dr. Thines received his dental training at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He completed residency training at the Buffalo General Hospital. He also earned an M.S. degree in Epidemiology from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.Dr. Thines holds a Fellowship from American Association of Hospital Dentists and he is recognized a Diplomate by the American Board of Special Care Dentistry.
Currently Dr. Thines is a Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Dentistry at Upstate Medical University and he serves as Chief of the Dental Service at the University Hospital. His previous faculty appointment was at Buffalo school of Dental Medicine in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences. He has served as the dental school’s Infection Control Officer and Committee Chairperson. Dr. Thines has been a consultant to the American Dental Association, NYS Department of Health, NYS Education Department and a technical advisor to the New York State Dental Association. He has lectured widely on oral medicine, patient management, communicable diseases as well as infection control.
Dr. Thines’ professional contributions include recent membership on the New York State Dental Foundation Board of Directors and Chair of the NYSDA Council on Dental Education and Licensure.
