Hepatic Disorders – Presented by Dr. Jayniz Mendez
Chronic Hepatitis is a major cause of liver cancer and chronic liver disease globally and in the US. Liver dysfunction may be attributed to a number of causes, including acquired infections and other pathologic conditions, as well as drug use. The patient with liver disease presents a significant management challenge for the dentist because the liver plays a vital role in etabolic functions, including the secretion of bile needed for fat absorption, conversion of sugar to glycogen, and excretion of bilirubin, a waste product of hemoglobin metabolism. Impairment of liver function can lead to abnormalities in the metabolism of amino acids, ammonia, protein, carbohydrates, and lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol).
Mental Health Disorders – Presented by Dr. Glorines Rivera
Mental disorders can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems that decrease the ability to function. People suffering from mental conditions are more vulnerable to developing dental problems and can increase risk through changes in health-related behavior, such as diet, habit and oral hygiene. In addition, these conditions and their treatment, can mediate biological responses that reduce immune system. With this presentation, you are going to be able to identify clinical manifestations that patients with anxiety, mayor depression, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia can present and how to manage them while providing dental treatment.
Diabetes – Presented by Dr. Reynaldo Valentin
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns intake into energy. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. More than 133 million Americans are living with diabetes (CDC, 2021). Initial symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst and urination. In other cases, symptoms can include unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, increased hunger, and sores that do not heal. Oral manifestations of uncontrolled diabetes can include xerostomia, burning sensation in the mouth, delayed wound healing, increased incidence and severity of infections, secondary infection with candidiasis, parotid salivary gland enlargement, gingivitis and periodontitis. In this presentation we will be talking about the appropriate management of patients with diabetes, appointment times, and complications related to diabetes in the dental chair.
