Mental Health Disorders
Mental health plays a critical role in dentistry, as many patients present with conditions such as anxiety, depression, or trauma that directly affect their oral health and treatment outcomes. These disorders may manifest as poor oral hygiene, missed appointments, or difficulty tolerating procedures, which in turn complicates the provider’s ability to deliver effective care. Beyond clinical challenges, untreated mental health conditions can also place patients at risk for more serious consequences, including suicidal thoughts or behaviors. This presentation will highlight the intersection of mental health and dentistry by reviewing common disorders, their impact on oral health, and strategies for dental professionals to recognize warning signs and support patients through appropriate management and referral.
