Course Synopsis:
Introduction: There is a high incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) reported among dental professionals and can be associated with lost productivity, increased health care cost and disability. The Bureau of Labor and Statistic of the Department of Labor defines MSDs as musculoskeletal system and connective tissue diseases and disorders when the event or exposure leading to the case is bodily reaction, overexertion, or repetitive motion. Dental professionals are often in prolonged static postures performing highly skilled fine motor tasks on a daily basis. The postures and movements that are used by dental professionals to perform dental procedures are often dictated by the patient positioning and the equipment being used. These factors can lead to repetitive, awkward or stressful positions of their body. The prevention of MSD’s can occur with a focus on workplace ergonomic strategies, improving clinician and patient positioning and education regarding the risk factors of developing MSD’s combined with strategies to mitigate them. A multi-pronged approach is necessary to safeguard dental clinicians from the increasingly prevalent work-related MSD’s. The inclusion of a wellness program can have positive benefits on injury prevention in the work place.
